<image:caption>Milena Kozlowska is a neuroscience researcher, writer, and artist who is endlessly fascinated by the brain and behavior. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Neuroscience from Northeastern University and currently works as a Research Scholar in the Maimon Lab at NYU, exploring regenerative strategies for neurodegenerative disorders. When not in the lab, she can often be found hiking in the mountains or creating artwork inspired by neuroscience and nature.</image:caption>

<image:title>BraiNY blog - In Sync: Inside the Mind of a Fighting Fish - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Paula Rodriguez Villamayor, PhD is a Fulbright Postdoctoral Researcher at the Zuckerman Institute at Columbia University (CU), where she studies the neural and molecular basis of aggression using Betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish) as a model. Her research focuses on how complex social behaviors are encoded in the brain, with an emphasis on uncovering the molecular pathways and neural circuits responsible for behavioral changes. Originally from Spain, Paula combines behavioral neuroscience with advanced experimental tools to better understand the biology of social behaviors. She currently serves as President of the Columbia University Postdoctoral Society, dedicating much of her time to supporting the postdoctoral community through resources, programming, and advocacy. She is also actively involved in science outreach, including CU’s Saturday Science program and BioBus events. Outside the lab, Paula enjoys traveling, spending time in nature, and is currently training for the NYC half marathon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BraiNY’s SciArt workshop paired artists with scientists to create collaborative works of art. “Untitled,” “Oligo Copio,” “Perception,” “Candid Contrasts,” and “Petri Dish in Rubble” are a set of artworks that uniquely push the boundaries of traditional art and science. “Untitled” urges liberty defense, “Oligo Copio” challenges microbial temporal rhythms, Perception” invites introspection on memory, “Candid Contrasts” fosters open discussion on human experiences, and “Petri Dish in Rubble” prompts ethical reflection. These artworks challenge societal norms, encourage introspection, and promote interdisciplinary dialogue, capturing the spirit of SciArt exploration in a truly interactive way.</image:caption>

Her research focuses on how brain regions that are involved in spatial memory communicate with each other, and how that communication can be disrupted in animal models of epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. Before starting grad school, she completed her BS in Neuroscience at University of Florida, where she studied how memory and decision making change during aging. When she is not doing science, Lauren enjoys baking, creative writing, growing way too many succulents, and petting dogs in central park. <image:caption>Brittany is a senior Ph.D. student working in the labs of Dr. Lynne Kiopres and Dr. Tony Movshon. For her Ph.D. work, she’s researching abnormalities in brain function in adult non-human primates that have a visual disorder called amblyopia. This disorder occurs due to irregular visual input within the first two months of life, but the effects persist throughout a person's life. The goal of her research is to identify the signatures of the disorder in irregular neuron responses throughout the visual system. She likes to use scientific outreach to expose tricks the brain uses all the time that we don't even realize and often take for granted. “Making experiments feel more like a game is a great way to get more people, especially kids, interested in science. “</image:caption>
