braiNY hosts events with volunteers from multiple partner institutions and also provides assistance and resources for partners to host and advertise their own events. None of the events below are paid positions, but they are all critical for the success of our programs. Role descriptions:

Brain Awareness Week Chair

You do not need to be a neuroscientist or hold a Ph.D. for this role.  While most weeks will require 10 hours or less, during Brain Awareness Week expect to spend 10-20 hours.

  • Act as the point of contact for Brain Awareness Week event coordinators and event sites

    • Update Event Registration and contact partners to register at least twice

    • Provide additional information for partners about advertising, providing information for the website, etc.

  • Work with volunteer coordinator(s) to create advertising campaign to recruit volunteers and monitor volunteer recruitment

  • Support volunteer coordinator(s) with updates on sites and materials needed

  • Organize distribution of materials to events

  • Provide support for social media team and website coordinators

  • Collect data about programs, including attendance, curriculum used and publicity received. Report to president of chapter at end of BAW

Brain Awareness Week Volunteer Coordinator

You do not need to be a neuroscientist or hold a Ph.D. for this role.  While most weeks will require 2 hours or less, during Brain Awareness Week expect to spend 5-10 hours. 

  • Act as point of contact for Brain Awareness Week event leaders and volunteers

  • Distribute the volunteer sign-up survey

  • Update BraiNY and BAW chairs about volunteer sign-ups/if additional blasts of sign-up sheets are needed

  • Assign volunteers to events

  • Ensure Event Leaders are in contact with their volunteers

Brain Awareness Week Event Leader

You do not need to be a neuroscientist or hold a Ph.D. for this role.  While most weeks will require 30 minutes or less, during Brain Awareness Week expect to spend 5 hours (including attending the event). 

  • Review volunteer training materials and adapt to program needs

  • Provide materials to volunteers and information about the event for volunteers as far in advance as possible (copy volunteer coordinators on all correspondences with volunteers)

    • Follow-up with reminders to volunteers one week, two days, and one day before event 

  • Communicate with Brain Awareness Week volunteer coordinators, chairs, and event site/contact

  • Ensure you have materials for the event

  • Report to BAW chairs on event, including attendance, curriculum used and publicity received

  • Attend event to assist with communication and collect photos and stories (e.g. from volunteers, site hosts and participants) for social media team

Brain Awareness Week Social Media Content Specialist

You do not need to be a neuroscientist or hold a Ph.D. to apply for this role. While most weeks will require 2 hours or less, during Brain Awareness Week expect to spend 10-15 hours.

  • Act as the point of contact for Brain Awareness Week event coordinators and the Social Media Manager

  • Collect information, photos and stories about programs for publicity/marketing and event reporting 

  • Create social media campaigns with photos and stories from volunteers, site hosts and participants

  • Coordinate guest posts

  • Ensure consistency of hashtag and branding
