Joseph LeDoux will discuss his book, The Deep History of Ourselves: The Four-Billion-Year Story of How We Got Conscious Brains. The book details the saga of evolution, and how our behavior has deep roots that connect every organism that has ever lived, including each of us, to the a cell living billions of years ago that managed to survive long enough to reproduce and spawn the whole of life. A key theme to be discussed is that life is dangerous, and essentially a process of postponing the inevitable demise of the organism. Interspersed with the discussion will be music from the book’s companion EP, “Songs of Life,” performed by LeDoux's band, The Amygdaloids, with Doc No on electronics. After a brief intermission, The Amygdaloids will play a set of songs about mind and brain from the their five “heavy mental” albums (that's "meNtal,"not "metal").
